HCML Sweeps the Board at Award Shortlistings

12 June 2009

HCML, the UK's leading provider of professional rehabilitation case management services, has received the highest number of nominations in the shortlist for the Rehabilitation First Awards 2009.

HCML have reached the final stage in all three categories that they were entered into; Young Achiever of the Year, Case Manager of the Year and Insurer Rehabilitation Initiative of the Year. The highly coveted accolades reward the crème-de-la-crème of the rehabilitation sector, officially recognising the excellence of the companies and individuals who further the development of rehabilitation within the UK.

Helen Merfield, HCML’s CEO and winner of the ‘Outstanding Individual Achievement’ category at the 2008 Rehabilitation First Awards, said: “The past year has been a momentous one for HCML, and we see these shortlistings, a record number for us compared to previous years, as a sign that we are progressing down the right path. We will all be keeping our fingers crossed for awards night.”

HCML was shortlisted in conjunction with Aviva in the Insurer Rehabilitation Initiative of the Year category, for their joint initiative ‘Back-Up’. Back-Up is a pioneering service dedicated to offering an end-to-end rehabilitation service for customers with back and neck problems, two of the most common causes of sickness absence in the UK and estimated to cost the economy £12.3 billion a year.

Mark Sharpe, Clinical Development Manager at Aviva's UK Health business, said: “We are extremely proud of the service that the Aviva and HCML partnership has created, which has already delivered numerous benefits for our customers. The personalised service employees receive from their dedicated Case Manager has proven to help speed their recovery, whilst helping employers control their sickness absence and medical insurance claims costs. The feedback we've received from our customers has been fantastic, and a Rehabilitation First Award would complete the honours and provide a great external endorsement for our innovative Back-Up service.”

Claire Mulvey, a Rehabilitation Case Manager and Clinical Supervisor at HCML, is one of only three to make it to the final stage in the Case Manager of the Year category. This award looks for unmatched motivational skills and excellent tangible results, achieved through innovative ways of working. Initially from a nursing background, Claire has been a Case Manager at HCML since 2005 and is now responsible for a team of eight.

Catherine MacMillan, Technical Account Manager at HCML, has been shortlisted to the final three for the Young Achiever of the Year Award. This category recognises the industry’s rising stars; those under thirty who have exceeded all expectations and not only contributed outstandingly to their team, but have pursued personal development and promoted the profession in the marketplace. Following qualifications in Occupational therapy, Catherine has quickly risen through the ranks since joining HCML in 2005 and now manages HCML’s relationship with a diverse portfolio of clients, as well as providing clinical and general rehabilitation training to clients and colleagues within HCML.

Helen Merfield, commented on the individual nominations, “We believe that the devotion all our staff show to achieving goals for our clients and individual rehabilitation customers, and to championing the industry in general, is unrivalled, and we are delighted that Claire and Catherine have been officially applauded. Their success reflects upon all our employees and HCML’s way of working as a whole.”

The winners will be announced at the Rehabilitation First Award Ceremony, one of the most anticipated dates in the industry diary, which this year will be held on 26th June at London Zoo.
