This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re speaking to a couple of our colleagues about their apprenticeships and finding out a bit more about what it’s like to be an apprentice and what opportunities they’ve experienced with HCML. Tatiana joined HCML in April 2023 as an HR Apprentice.

What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship?

This is the career I’ve always wanted, but I had no previous experience within HR. Before HCML I worked in customer services which provided me with the qualities to get my foot in the door to an HR apprenticeship, which I’m really happy I started. There are so many transferable skills and fundamentally HR is all about people.

How has your experience working with HCML been so far?

It’s been absolutely amazing. I’m 30 so I have a history of work, but I can genuinely say this is by far the best company, the best people and the best culture; I feel very fortunate to be here.

What skills have you developed during your apprenticeship?

I’ve learnt a lot every day – a lot of practical skills needed for HR. But I’ve also learnt that patience and emotional intelligence are good skills to have when working in HR. I’ve learnt a lot from my colleagues, who have inspired me.

Can you share a memorable moment or project from your time as an apprentice?

I really like an initiative that we started called ‘HR Check ins’. They have been so useful. We do 1 month, 3 month, and 6 month check ins with new starters to see how they are getting on. It really goes a long way to be talking to someone and checking in with them to see how they are. Something so small can be really impactful.

How has the mentorship and support from colleagues impacted your professional growth?

My teammates have really begun to help shape my HR experience and skills. You can have teammates from anywhere, but you won’t have the specific leadership that I have here. We have a diverse team and I believe my personal life has been developed through professionalism.

What advice would you give to future apprentices in the company?

Ask questions and use your study day wisely!

In what ways has your perspective or approach to your career evolved during your apprenticeship?

The actual hands’on work experience has really shown me the routes and new skills I can learn

What goals do you have for the future within the company?

I want to retire here. I want to progress my career at HCML and help shape the company.
