Depending on the needs of the case, the INA takes place either in person or
via video or telephone call. Our rehabilitation case managers will:

A view on absence – HCML’s CEO shares his perspectives on rehabilitation & absence management after being hit by a bus in Spain

When Keith Bushnell was knocked down by a bus in Madrid it sharpened priorities for the friends who were with him. Bushnell, CEO of rehabilitation case management company HCML and a passionate Chelsea fan, was in the city last season for his team’s Champion’s League clash with Atletico Madrid. ‘I was lying on the pavement being tended by medics when one of my group told them, “Can you make your mind up quick if he’s got to go to hospital, because we don’t want to miss the kick-off.” ‘Luckily I wasn’t badly hurt and made the game, but though it was partly in fun – I think! – it certainly confirmed to me that people are strongly driven by their own priorities.’ Currently Bushnell, who took over at the helm of HCML in 2010, is busy creating strategies that will persuade employers to give greater priority to the health and wellbeing of their greatest asset – their staff. HCML has always delivered independent medical needs assessments and subsequent case management services for solicitors...

What the New Rehab Code needs to be – HCML wades in with its opinion on the imminent new rehabilitation code

MAKE THE REHAB CARE CODE FIT FOR PURPOSE Architects of the revised ‘dysfunctional’ Rehabilitation Code have a one-off chance to make it fit for purpose for personal injury clients and the market, claims HCML, who are lobbying for ‘real change’. The rehabilitation case management company wants the IUA – ABI Rehabilitation Working Party to tackle round two of consultation on the voluntary code with a mission to cut the delays over assessments, treatment and care which set patient recovery back and increase costs to insurers and potentially cause harm to injured parties. HCML says a better designed code will help injured individuals, solicitors and defendants by creating a clearer direction for rehabilitation during personal injury cases. Keith Bushnell, HCML’s chief executive said: “The point of the code is to allow early intervention even when liability is unclear. Yet time after time we see necessary rehabilitation held up by delays in agreeing liability. “The code needs a mechanism...

HCML launches the next-generation of catastrophic injury assessments

HCML's new Acute INA has been tailored to ensure clients receive the highest standard of care required to maximise their recovery potential while retaining their independence. The Acute INA takes place in the acute care setting and will be implemented by specialists in brain and spinal cord injury, amputation, burns, musculoskeletal damage and paediatric care to cover physical as well as psychological, behavioural or cognitive problems. Each specialist case manager has responsibility for ensuring clients receive clinically-appropriate care - based on an independent assessment - which can see them liaise with designated care providers, including the NHS where appropriate, to ensure the injured client's needs are fully met. Alternative care plans, which may include private healthcare provision, will be recommended if it is deemed waiting times for planned treatment are too lengthy at a crucial point in the client's recovery. HCML says its goal for each case is to bring the client...

OCCUPATIONAL REHABILITATION LAUNCH RESOLVES HR HEADACHE

HR professionals have a new “pragmatic occupational rehabilitation” resource to resolve costly return-to-work problems. It clarifies the work staff can handle and the line manager’s role in their recovery. Rehabilitation case management pioneer HCML says its new Management Action Plan service (MAP) will transform how absent staff are assessed and managed and resolve HR headaches that most employers face, yet struggle to handle. MAP’s suite of services are tailored to clinical recovery and the length of time from the start of illness or injury to assessment, to provide accelerated and cost-effective recovery.  Its comprehensive assessments cover absences from two days to years and also help staff struggling in the workplace. Its telephonic and video-call assessments eliminate barriers to sustained attendance and performance.  Its assessments review the functional demands of job tasks. Staffs with complex conditions are assessed face-to-face, often at work, to observe functional...

Catastrophic Rehabiltitation Case Management

We are there for people at what is likely to be one of the
worst times of their lives. Catastrophic injury means that
individuals are often left with extensive and life changing
injuries. This includes traumatic brain injury, spinal cord
injury, loss of limbs or severe burns.

Early multidisciplinary rehabilitation and continuity of care is vital for the rehab client to achieve successful long-term
functional outcomes. Our rehabilitation case managers have strong relationships with a wide range of healthcare
professionals and litigation stakeholders. Coupled with

their clinical expertise across the private and statutory landscapes, they source innovative, effective and clinically
justified rehabilitation solutions.

Our rehabilitation case managers will consider longer term rehabilitation goals as early as possible to ensure measures
are put in place to build a bespoke pathway of recovery for the individual. They work closely with the rehab clients and their families throughout their recovery journey to monitor progress, review rehabilitation goals and adapt interventions accordingly.

A person-centred approach

Itʼs really important to us to understand what the rehab client was like prior to their injuries. We work with the individual, their families and carers to help us quickly build a comprehensive picture of the rehab client pre-personal injury so that we can make the best recommendations for their rehabilitation programme without under or overpromising.

By understanding what the individual enjoyed and was previously capable of, our rehabilitation case managers can build a bespoke programme that encourages better client engagement and accelerated outcomes.

The impact is often life-changing for the personʼs family and friends too. It can take a long time to process whatʼs happened. They will often need to adopt a different role and adapt to living with someone who can no longer fulfil the role they played prior to injury – whether it be at work, at home, socially or in the community. We guide families through the process and help them to access the support they need too.
