Holistic Rehabilitation and Psychosocial Support: Case Studies in Complex Recovery

Following a traumatic incident in 2024, the client was referred to HCML to support their recovery. They faced a range of challenges including mental health difficulties, back pain, and the worsening of pre-existing ADHD symptoms. HCML provided tailored, multidisciplinary support to help the client regain stability, improve wellbeing, and work towards returning to everyday life and full-time employment.

Immediate Needs Assessment

  • Mental Health: The client was struggling with their mental health and actively sought support to address this.
  • Return to Work: One of the primary aims was to return to full-time work, enabling the client to support their family and resume daily responsibilities.
  • Social Engagement: The client expressed a strong desire to re-engage socially with friends and family, which had been impacted by the incident.
  • ADHD and Trauma: The client had a pre-existing ADHD diagnosis, and the incident had exacerbated symptoms. Support was needed to manage both ADHD and trauma-related challenges.
  • Back Pain and Physical Activity: The client also experienced ongoing back pain, which limited their ability to engage in physical activity and impacted their overall rehabilitation progress.
  • Financial Stability: The client was experiencing financial difficulties, which were contributing to psychological stress.

HCML support

  • Therapy was arranged to address both ADHD and trauma, allowing the client to receive tailored psychological support. This dual-focus approach helped the client better understand and manage the interaction between their ADHD and the emotional impact of the incident.

  • Liaison was made with the client’s GP to support medication management, as requested by the client, ensuring continuity of care and appropriate pharmacological support. I also worked closely with the GP to access statutory services to support the client’s ADHD, which helped improve their engagement with rehabilitation.

  • Due to frequent changes in the client’s contact number and difficulties maintaining communication, I was proactive in maintaining contact through alternative methods to ensure continuity of care.

  • The client missed a number of therapy appointments. I liaised closely with the treating therapists to explore ways to improve attendance, including identifying barriers and implementing supportive strategies to encourage engagement.

  • Assistance was provided to complete PIP paperwork, which was instrumental in addressing the client’s financial concerns and reducing associated stress

Outcome

The client reported a positive outcome from the support received. Access to therapy improved their ability to manage ADHD symptoms and trauma-related distress. The successful PIP application alleviated financial pressures, which in turn supported their mental health.

With improved psychological stability and reduced external stressors, the client was better positioned to work toward returning to full-time employment and re-engaging in social and family activities.
