Children and Young People’s Services

Inspiring confidence and independence following life changing injury.

Catastrophic and traumatic injury is life-changing for a child or young person, and their family. It is a huge step into the unknown for them and all those around them, which is why we are there to guide, support and listen to children and young people, and their families at every step along their rehabilitation journey.

Connecting specialist support to specific needs

Each child is unique, which means their recovery and rehabilitation journey is also unique. A huge range of specialist support exists out there. It takes experience and expertise to help young people and their families access the right services at the right time.

Our children and young people’s specialist case managers specialise in working with children, young people, and their families, following personal injury or clinical negligence.

The team has exceptional insight into a wide range of treatment and interventions and are experienced at working with multidisciplinary teams across statutory, voluntary and privately funded services.

Our specialist case managers build a bespoke and flexible rehabilitation programme to support the specific needs of each child or young person. It’s this individualised case management that is vital to ensuring the child or young person gets the best start to their future, optimising recovery as early as possible.

Small voices, big aspirations

We work closely with children and their families to understand what’s important to them. It’s this knowledge that underpins the clinical recommendations we make.

Understanding the different goals and aspirations of children and families enables us to shape a rehabilitation programme that inspires motivation and encourages the determination to succeed. This is fundamental to providing a rehabilitation programme that children and young people can fully engage with, and boosts their confidence and independence as they grow.

The bigger picture – family matters

Catastrophic injury is not only life-changing for the child or young person it’s happened to, but it also impacts the whole family. HCML specialist case managers have the experience and skills to support the families too.

We support parents who are suddenly faced with huge decisions about their child’s future, whilst managing their own emotions and ongoing family life. We help siblings to adjust to changes in day-to-day life and may have to adapt their own behaviour or way of life as a result of their sibling’s injury.

We facilitate services to support families navigating the rehabilitation process. We help them get the support they’re entitled to, ensuing they can access services that help the whole family come to terms with what has happened, and acknowledging that parents may need support for themselves to be able to support their child and the rest of their family through the process.

Ongoing support

Understanding and addressing the immediate effects of the injury on the child’s physical and mental health is just the first step.

Children are continually growing and developing, which means that as the child develops, their rehabilitation needs change.

Our specialist case managers are responsive to any changes, adjusting interventions and introducing new ones, flexing the pace and level of engagement accordingly to the child’s needs.

For every family, a whole team of experts

We’re experienced in supporting children and young people following catastrophic injury with specialists in the fields of acquired brain injury (ABI), amputation, spinal cord injury, muscular skeletal (MSK) injury, complex neurological and orthopaedic injury. Our expertise extends to associated medical, behavioural, cognitive, social, and educational needs. We work with specialists across private, voluntary and statutory services to ensure they access the most appropriate care.

Parents have a say

A parent knows their child best. They are integral in helping our specialist case managers and the multidisciplinary teams to understand what their child was like before the incident. They help us build a picture of what they liked, what they were good at and what they achieved before their injury, so that we can user these interests to develop a rehabilitation programme that motivates them and inspires them to achieve the best possible outcomes for the child.

Funding

Early assessment and rehabilitation are vital to achieve successful outcomes along the recovery journey and has a huge impact on long-term functional outcomes. We’re happy to discuss innovative funding solutions on a case-by-case basis to ensure the child or young person has access to rehabilitation that meets their immediate needs.
