Your guide to HCML’s physiotherapy service

Who are HCML

HCML is an independent provider of rehabilitation services. We provide a range of treatment services, including physiotherapy to help people recover from injury and return to function as soon as possible.

How will physiotherapy treatment help me?
Physiotherapy can treat a range of musculoskeletal problems including those associated with muscles, bones, joints, tendons and ligaments. It helps to re-establish movement and function and can reduce the risk of re-injury.

How do I access physiotherapy

Select a clinic

Select a registered, convenient physiotherapy clinic via the HCML team or Digital Rehab platform.

Preparing for your appointment

Relevant case notes and injury details will be provided to your chosen physiotherapy clinic to access ahead of your appointment.

Arranging your assessment

Your chosen clinic will contact you directly within 48 hours to arrange an initial assessment.

Initial assessment

Your first appointment will be an initial assessment with your Physiotherapist. This generally takes about 30 minutes.
They will review your notes, and ask you questions about your specific condition, symptoms and/or any pain you may be experiencing.

At the initial assessment, you may not receive any treatment as the main aim at this point is to gather all necessary information to determine the correct treatment plan. The Physiotherapist may also ask you to demonstrate movement(s) to see how they are affected by your current symptoms. This could include performing an everyday task to assess your range of motion, strength and/or reflexes, and to see what exacerbates any pain.

Bespoke treatment programme

Your Physiotherapist will discuss your bespoke treatment programme with you and identify self-help techniques to support your recovery. Treatment plans are tailored to your individual injury, symptoms and recovery goals, and may include a range of approaches such as education, exercise-based rehabilitation, strengthening programmes, activity modification and, where appropriate, hands-on techniques. It is important to note that physiotherapy does not always involve manual treatment, such as massage, and your Physiotherapist will recommend the evidence-based interventions most appropriate for your recovery. Your Physiotherapist will then provide a report to HCML outlining their recommendations and, where appropriate, will request additional sessions.

Appointments are 30 minutes long and tend to be scheduled weekly or fortnightly and can usually be booked at the end of each session. All parties will be aware of the approved number of sessions available. If you are unsure, you can contact your HCML Case Manager who will be able to confirm.

Regular progress checks

Your Physiotherapist will answer any questions you may have throughout the course of your treatment. Your HCML Case Manager will tailor their support to your clinical needs and preferences. Where appropriate, they may contact you to review your functional progress, discuss your treatment experience, assess progress towards your agreed goals, and provide additional support where needed.

Final physiotherapy session

Your Physiotherapist will send a final report to HCML detailing the outcomes of your physiotherapy programme and any further recommendations. In most cases, you will be provided with some further self-management techniques to progress your recovery and to help prevent re-injury. HCML will be in touch once this report has been received to discuss your discharge from treatment and to check you’re happy to self-manage, or to confirm the next steps regarding any recommended investigations.

How will HCML monitor my progress?

At the start of your case, HCML will agree with you some goals and activities that you would like to achieve and/or get back to being able to do. We’ll ask you to provide a score for those activities which will indicate how well you can do them at that point. This is a measure called the Patient Specific Function Scale (PSFS). Throughout your case, either via your Physiotherapist, HCML digital rehab, or your HCML Case Manager, we’ll ask for regular updates on these scores so we can gauge improvements against those goals and activities.

Alongside the PSFS, where appropriate, we may also follow up on any impact your condition is having on your work, helping us to better understand your progress and support your recovery.

What if I need further treatments or investigations?

HCML can coordinate any further physiotherapy or investigations you might need, either post discharge or on the recommendation of your Physiotherapist. If your symptoms reappear and don’t settle with time following the closure of your case, then please do get in touch and we will let you know the appropriate next steps.
