A better way to do Occupational Health

Fast, clear and human centred Occupational Health that keeps people in work and helps them return sooner when they can’t.

Understanding the person behind every absence

We take time to understand the person behind every case. Through compassionate, biopsychosocial conversations and meaningful manager engagement before and after each assessment, we uncover what is truly affecting someone’s ability to work.

Our model reflects the direction of modern Occupational Health, aligned with policy initiatives like Keep Britain Working, with a focus on early intervention and practical, whole person support.

Why traditional Occupational Health misses the mark

Many Occupational Health pathways still follow a simple referral, appointment and report model, with little meaningful engagement with the employer. Without wider context, assessments can miss underlying issues, produce less practical recommendations and create delays that extend absence unnecessarily.

They can also default to physician escalation for issues that may be better addressed through multidisciplinary support, manager context and a more complete understanding of the person’s situation.

The result is often repeat assessments, rising cost and avoidable long-term absence.

HCML works differently

Our 5-day end-to-end model is designed to move faster and work more effectively. We involve the right clinician at the right time, look at the whole person, and make sure recommendations are realistic for the manager, the employee and the organisation.

  • We speak with managers before the assessment to understand the role, pressures and business context.
  • We hold compassionate, biopsychosocial conversations that help people feel heard and surface underlying issues.
  • Use a multidisciplinary model rather than escalating by default.
  • We review multiple issues in one assessment where appropriate.
  • We follow up after the assessment to make sure recommendations are realistic and practical.
  • And we have evidence that this works, reducing unnecessary absence by more than 50 hours per case.

A model built for better health outcomes.

A different way of working with managers

We speak with managers before and after assessment so recommendations are practical, relevant and easier to implement. This reduces delay and gives managers clearer next steps.

Understands more than the presenting issue

We look at the full picture behind absence, including physical, mental, emotional and social factors. That leads to clearer recommendations and fewer missed barriers to return.

The right clinician, first time

Our multidisciplinary team brings together OH specialists, therapists, counsellors, functional health practitioners, MSK experts and others.

We match the clinician to the need, escalating to physicians only where they add real value.

Proven to reduce avoidable absence

Our model consistently reduces unnecessary absence by addressing the factors that affect someone’s ability to work. On average, we cut more than 50 hours of avoidable absence per case.
