Health Surveillance

Proactive, clinically robust health surveillance that protects people, supports compliance and helps employers act early to prevent problems.

Experienced occupational health professionals

All health surveillance assessments are carried out by HCML’s qualified Occupational Health screening technicians. Where appropriate, we also work with trusted third‑party providers who are either qualified to the same standards as our own assessors or are trained and overseen by HCML’s internal Occupational Health nurses to deliver assessments on our behalf.

Every assessment is grounded in clinical evidence and delivered with empathy, clarity and professionalism. We understand that health conversations can feel complex or sensitive. That’s why our approach is respectful, proportionate and focused on outcomes that work for both employer and employee.

A human approach to Health Surveillance

Health surveillance is not just a regulatory requirement, it is a critical part of protecting your people and building a healthier, safer workplace. At HCML, we deliver clear, clinically robust health surveillance programmes that help organisations identify risk early, meet legal obligations, and support employees to stay well and productive at work.

We combine clinical expertise with a genuinely human approach, ensuring employers have confidence in their compliance while employees feel respected, reassured and supported.

What is health surveillance?

Health surveillance is a system of ongoing checks designed to identify early signs of work‑related ill health in employees exposed to specific workplace risks. When delivered correctly, it enables timely intervention, helps prevent conditions from worsening, and supports informed decisions about individual fitness for work. Crucially, it also provides valuable insight to help organisations maintain, review and update their risk assessments and workplace controls.

Our health surveillance services are aligned with HSE legislation and best‑practice guidance, helping you demonstrate compliance while putting employee wellbeing at the heart of your approach.

Why health surveillance matters to employers

For HR and Health & Safety leaders, effective health surveillance supports three critical outcomes:

  • Legal compliance – meeting statutory duties under health and safety legislation
  • Risk reduction – identifying potential issues before they become long‑term health conditions
  • Workforce resilience – keeping people safe, capable and confident in their roles

When health surveillance works well, it protects not just individuals, but your organisation’s performance, reputation and culture.

Flexible, on‑site health surveillance assessments

HCML provides on‑site health surveillance visits, designed to fit around your operational needs and minimise disruption. Appointment timings are coordinated through the employer and take place within work time.

Each programme is tailored to your specific workplace risk assessments and job roles, ensuring relevance, compliance and efficiency.

What employees can expect

We believe positive experiences matter. Health surveillance should feel professional, calm and straightforward and never intrusive.

At appointments:

  • Employees do not need to undress, though footwear may be removed for weight checks
  • Blood pressure checks may require access to the left arm
  • Appointments typically last between 15 minutes and one hour, depending on required tests

Clear guidance is provided in advance, including advice on smoking, caffeine intake and anything that may affect test results.

Data protection and confidentiality you can trust

Confidentiality is fundamental to everything we do at HCML. All medical information is held securely and treated with the strictest confidence, and results are never shared with employers without the employee’s explicit consent. Where abnormal results are identified, we support individuals with appropriate clinical follow‑up, including onward referrals and communication with their GP where necessary.

This approach protects trust while ensuring employees receive the right care at the right time.

Clear, timely reporting for employers

Following each site visit, employers receive:

  • Certificates of fitness for each employee via our secure email platform
  • Clear confirmation of tests completed, results, recall dates and any recommendations
  • Highlighted abnormal findings with guidance informed by clinical review

We can provide an end‑of‑day overview before leaving site, giving key contacts early visibility of any abnormal results, with full written reports typically issued within two working days, providing confidence to act quickly and appropriately
