The Rehabilitation Client’s story is a testament to extraordinary determination and resilience. Following an above-knee amputation in July 2023, the Rehabilitation Client initially faced significant challenges with mobility and independence. Frustrated by his NHS prosthetic and dependent on a wheelchair, he sought specialised support. In April 2024, funding approval allowed the Rehabilitation Client to begin working with STEPS Prosthetics, with dedicated case management provided by HCML, and embark on an intensive rehabilitation programme at STEPS Rehabilitation in Sheffield.

The Rehabilitation Client’s progress has been remarkable. Starting from complete reliance on a wheelchair, he now walks confidently with minimal assistance and even unaided over short distances, successfully navigating stairs, slopes, and varied terrains. This transformation highlights the effectiveness of personalised rehabilitation strategies coordinated by HCML in partnership with STEPS.

As a former serviceman, the Rehabilitation Client deeply appreciates the support provided by the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association (BLESMA). Motivated by gratitude and determination to give back, the Rehabilitation Client is preparing for an extraordinary fundraising skydive in May 2025. This event represents the beginning of his journey to raise awareness and support for fellow veterans facing similar challenges.

What the difference looks like

Before partnering with HCML and STEPS, the Rehabilitation Client struggled greatly with basic mobility, significantly impacting his quality of life. Here’s how tailored rehabilitation transformed his situation:

  • The Rehabilitation Client progressed from being wheelchair-dependent to confidently walking with minimal support.
  • Personalised rehabilitation strategies enabled him to overcome previous obstacles, such as stairs, slopes, and outdoor environments.
  • Regaining independence allowed the Rehabilitation Client to enjoy a recent solo holiday in the Dominican Republic, a clear indication of his significant progress.
  • The Rehabilitation Client’s journey underscores HCML’s dedication to delivering personalised, holistic rehabilitation pathways designed to empower individuals.
